Tempo shows how fast the musical pulse moves.

Time signature shows how beats are grouped into bars.

For example, 4/4, ♩ = 60 BPM means:

  • each bar contains four quarter-note beats;
  • the quarter-note beats move at a speed of 60 beats per minute.
4/4, ♩ = 60 BPM

You can increase the tempo to 90 BPM while keeping the time signature at 4/4. The music becomes faster, but each bar still contains four beats.

You can also keep ♩ = 60 BPM and change the time signature to 3/4. The beats move at the same speed, but a new bar now begins after three beats instead of four.

The main idea is simple: tempo changes speed; time signature changes how beats are grouped.

What changes when you change the tempo

Take a simple 4/4 time signature and play one strum on each beat:

In both examples, the time signature is the same: 4/4. Only the speed has changed.

On guitar, this principle helps when learning a strumming pattern or riff. If a pattern is difficult to play, you usually need to lower the tempo first, not change the time signature.

What changes when you change the time signature

Now keep the quarter-note speed the same: ♩ = 60 BPM.

In 4/4, a bar contains four beats:

The individual beats move at the same speed. But the first beat of a new bar returns in a different place: after four beats in 4/4, and after three beats in 3/4.

This changes the sense of movement. 4/4 often feels like an even four-beat cycle, while 3/4 feels like a repeating “one-two-three” motion.

Where does the bar fit in?

A bar is one section of music organized according to the time signature.

For example:

Time signature: 4/4
Tempo:          ♩ = 80 BPM
Bar:            | 1 2 3 4 |

The time signature says: “group the beats in fours.” The tempo says: “quarter-note beats move at 80 beats per minute.” A bar is one specific group of those four beats.

Why 6/8 does not mean “fast”

The 6/8 time signature does not define speed either. It contains six eighth-note durations in each bar, but they are most often felt as two groups of three:

6/8: 1   2   3   | 4   5   6

This meter can sound slow or fast. That depends on the tempo.

In 6/8, the pulse is often counted not by each eighth note, but by the larger beat made of three eighth notes: a dotted quarter note.

6/8, ♩. = 60 BPM

This means that 60 large beats pass in a minute, and each bar contains two of those large beats.

6/8: two large beats, each divided into three eighth notes

At this stage, it is enough to remember: 6/8 is a way of grouping time, not an instruction to play fast.

Tempo and number of notes are not the same thing

Tempo can stay the same even when more notes appear inside each beat.

For example, at ♩ = 60 BPM, you can play:

In the second example, the hand moves more often, but the quarter-note beat is still moving at 60 BPM. The subdivision has changed, not the tempo.

How to check the difference on guitar

Take one chord, such as Am, and play downstrokes.

1. Change only the tempo

4/4, ♩ = 60 BPM:  D D D D | D D D D
4/4, ♩ = 90 BPM:  D D D D | D D D D

In both cases, count four beats per bar. Listen to how the speed changes.

2. Change only the time signature

4/4, ♩ = 60 BPM:  D D D D | D D D D
3/4, ♩ = 60 BPM:  D D D   | D D D

Listen to how the new bar begins earlier in 3/4, although the speed of each beat is the same.

Use the main accent on the first eighth note and a secondary accent on the fourth. Here, uppercase D means a more noticeable downstroke, while lowercase d means a lighter one. Listen for two groups of three rather than six heavy beats.

A 5-minute exercise

  1. For one minute, play four downstrokes in 4/4 at ♩ = 60 BPM.
  2. For one minute, play the same four downstrokes in 4/4 at ♩ = 90 BPM.
  3. For one minute, play three downstrokes per bar in 3/4 at ♩ = 60 BPM.
  4. For one minute, play 6/8 as two groups of three: D d d | D d d.
  5. For the last minute, repeat the version that caused the most confusion.

After the exercise, ask yourself:

  • where did the speed change;
  • where did the number of beats in a bar change;
  • where were the beats grouped in threes?

Common mistakes

  • Thinking that 4/4 means slow and 6/8 means fast. Time signature does not set the speed.
  • Confusing a change of time signature with speeding up. In 3/4, the bar is shorter in quarter-note beats than in 4/4, but the beats themselves can move at the same speed.
  • Talking about BPM without specifying the beat value. When comparing meters, it matters whether the click counts a quarter note or a dotted quarter note.
  • Treating a denser pattern as a faster tempo. One beat can contain more notes even when BPM has not changed.
  • Changing the time signature when you need to slow an exercise down. When learning a part, you usually keep the time signature and lower the tempo.
