C major and A minor contain the same notes:
C–D–E–F–G–A–B
They share the same key signature and the same set of diatonic chords. But they are not one key with two different names.
In C major, the music gravitates toward C. In A minor, A becomes the center. As a result, the same notes and chords take on different scale degrees, functions, and directions of movement.
What are relative keys?
Relative keys are a major key and a minor key that share the same key signature and pitch collection.
Examples:
C major and A minor
G major and E minor
F major and D minor
D major and B minor
Each pair contains one major key and one minor key. Their tonics are different.

This relationship is based primarily on the natural minor scale. Harmonic and melodic minor raise additional scale degrees, but retain the same key signature.
Relative and parallel keys are not the same
These relationships work in opposite ways.

The Russian term «параллельные тональности» corresponds to relative keys in English. The term parallel keys refers to major and minor keys with the same tonic.
How to find the relative minor and major
The relative minor begins on the sixth degree of a major scale.
In C major:
C–D–E–F–G–A–B

The sixth degree is A, so the relative minor is A minor.
The relative major begins on the third degree of the natural minor scale.
In A minor:
A–B–C–D–E–F–G
↑
III
The third degree is C, so the relative major is C major.
There is also a quicker method:
from a major tonic, move down a minor third → relative minor
from a minor tonic, move up a minor third → relative major

G → E = G major → E minor
D → B = D major → B minor
F → D = F major → D minor
The same notes do not mean the same key
Compare the scales:
C major: C–D–E–F–G–A–B–C
A natural minor: A–B–C–D–E–F–G–A
The pitch material is the same. The point of reference is different.
In C major, the notes have these scale-degree functions:

C is the tonic in C major, but becomes the third degree in A minor. A is the sixth degree in C major, but becomes the tonic in A minor.
The first example resolves to C. In the second, the same notes are organized around A. The difference comes not from a new scale, but from a new tonal center.
How chord functions change
Harmonizing C major and A natural minor produces the same set of triads:
C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim
But their scale degrees and functions change.

A chord list alone is therefore not enough to identify the key. You also need to hear which chord acts as the point of stability and where the harmony is heading.
The main clue is the tonal center
The tonal center is the note and chord that the music presents as its stable point of return.
Several clues usually reveal it.
Phrase endings
When the melody and harmony repeatedly end on C, C major is more likely. When they end on A or Am, A minor is more likely.
The opening note is less reliable. A song can begin on any chord and still move toward a different tonic.
Cadences
In C major, the following motion strongly confirms the center:
G → C
V → I
In A minor:
E7 → Am
V7 → i
The E7 chord introduces G♯. This note belongs neither to C major nor to A natural minor, but it acts as a leading tone to A. It is one of the clearest signs of a minor tonal center.
Bass and pedal tones
A sustained or frequently repeated bass note strengthens the sense of a tonal center. The same pitch collection over a C drone will be heard differently from the same notes over an A drone.
Accents and duration
The tonic often falls on strong beats, lasts longer than nearby notes, and returns at important points in the form.
Why G♯ appears in A minor
C major and A natural minor share the same pitch collection. But natural minor does not create a strong semitone pull toward the tonic:
G → A = whole tone
To strengthen the resolution, the seventh degree is raised:
G♯ → A = semitone
This produces A harmonic minor and the major dominant chord E or E7:
E7 = E–G♯–B–D
E7 → Am
This does not mean that A minor is no longer relative to C major. The key signature remains unchanged, while G♯ is written as an accidental within the music.
One progression can sound ambiguous
Consider this loop:
Am–F–C–G
All four chords belong to both C major and A minor.
In C major, they can be analyzed as:
vi–IV–I–V
In A minor:
i–VI–III–VII
The loop alone does not always provide a definitive answer. Its interpretation depends on the melody, bass line, beginning and ending of the section, chord duration, and the cadence that follows.
The first ending directs the loop toward C. The second adds E7 → Am and establishes A minor.
How music moves between relative keys
Moving between relative keys is convenient because nearly all the pitch material is already shared. The melody and chords do not need to be rebuilt completely; their hierarchy changes instead.
From C major to A minor
C–G–Am–F | Dm–E7–Am
Until E7, the progression can still be heard in C major. The Dm chord belongs to both keys:
Dm = ii in C major
Dm = iv in A minor
Then E7 → Am confirms the new center.
From A minor to C major
Am–Dm–G–C
In A minor, the chords can be analyzed as:
i–iv–VII–III
But G → C also functions as V → I in C major. If the music remains centered on C afterward, the listener begins to hear C major as the new key.
Not every appearance of Am in C major constitutes a move to A minor. A change of key requires the new center to be confirmed by a cadence, melody, and further harmonic development.
Why use relative keys?
Create contrast without a drastic change of notes
A verse can center on A minor while the chorus centers on C major. The shared notes maintain continuity, while the new tonal center changes the direction and color of the music.
Reinterpret familiar chords
The same chord can change function when the key changes. F is the subdominant IV in C major, but VI in A minor. This makes smooth transitions possible without sudden chromatic shifts.
Preserve melodic material
A melody using only the white-key notes can be directed toward either C or A by changing its points of emphasis, bass line, and harmony. The pitch collection stays the same, but the musical meaning changes.
Make harmony less predictable
A progression can avoid a clear tonic for a while and reveal its center later through a cadence. This creates expectation without requiring complex chromatic harmony.

An eight-minute exercise
1. Find a relative pair
Choose a major key and identify its sixth scale degree.
G major → E → E minor
D major → B → B minor
F major → D → D minor
2. Play one pitch collection from two tonics
For C major and A minor, play only the white-key notes, but end the scale on its own tonic each time.
3. Compare the cadences
G–C
E7–Am
After each cadence, hold the final chord and listen for the sense of completion.
4. Renumber the chords
Take this set:
C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim
Label the scale degrees first in C major, then in A minor.
5. Test an ambiguous progression
Play this loop several times:
Am–F–C–G
Then add each ending in turn:
G–C
E7–Am
Notice how the ending changes your perception of the entire preceding loop.
6. Find both tonics on the fretboard
Locate every C and A within one position. Play a short phrase using the shared pitch collection, ending first on C and then on A.
Common mistakes
Treating relative keys as one key. They share the same notes, but their tonics and scale-degree functions are different.
Identifying the key from the first chord. The opening chord may not be the tonic. Phrase endings, cadences, bass movement, and melodic points of emphasis are more reliable.
Treating every Am chord as a move to A minor. In C major, Am is the ordinary sixth-degree chord. A new tonal center needs additional confirmation.
Ignoring G♯ in A minor. It comes from harmonic minor and strengthens the dominant resolution E7 → Am.
Looking for the relative minor on the third degree of major. The relative minor begins on the sixth degree of a major scale. Conversely, the third degree of natural minor becomes the tonic of the relative major.
Mixing up Russian and English terminology. The Russian term «параллельные тональности» corresponds to relative keys. The English term parallel keys refers to major and minor keys with the same tonic.
Assuming the same key signature guarantees the same sound. A key signature shows the basic pitch collection, but it does not identify which note acts as the center.
