Minor triads appear in songs just as often as major triads. Chords like Am, Dm, Em, Cm, and Gm are all minor triads if they do not contain any extra chord tones.
The main idea is simple: a minor triad is almost the same as a major triad, but its third is one semitone lower. That minor third is what creates the minor quality.

A minor triad is a chord made of three notes:

- the minor third;
- the perfect fifth.
The short formula is:
1–♭3–5
Here 1 is the root of the chord, ♭3 is the minor third above the root, and 5 is the perfect fifth.
For example, C minor contains the notes C, E♭, and G:
C — 1
E♭ — ♭3
G — 5
What makes the triad minor
The minor quality comes from the minor third.
In C minor, the note E♭ is three semitones above C:
C → D♭ → D → E♭
That interval is a minor third. It is one semitone lower than a major third.
Compare the two chords:
C major = C–E–G
C minor = C–E♭–G
Only one note changes: E becomes E♭. But the character of the chord changes a lot.
Try not to hear this only as “happy versus sad”. A more useful idea is this: in major, the third is higher; in minor, the third is lower. That difference gives the chord a different character.
The formula in semitones
A minor triad can be counted from the root.
From the root to the minor third — 3 semitones. From the root to the perfect fifth — 7 semitones.
1 → ♭3 = 3 semitones
1 → 5 = 7 semitones
For C minor:
C → E♭ = 3 semitones
C → G = 7 semitones
This method helps you build minor chords from any note. Choose a root, count 3 semitones to find the minor third, and count 7 semitones to find the perfect fifth.
Examples of minor triads from different roots
The 1–♭3–5 formula works from any root. The starting note changes, but the logic stays the same: root, minor third, perfect fifth.

Notice C minor and G minor. They contain flats: E♭ and B♭. This is normal. The formula requires a minor third, so sometimes the note has to be flat.
For example, G minor is built from G, B♭, and D. If you use B instead of B♭, the chord is no longer minor. It becomes a major triad:
G minor = G–B♭–D
G major = G–B–D
The root and the fifth stay the same. The third changes — and the character of the chord changes with it.
Minor and major triads side by side
The easiest way to understand a minor triad is to compare it with a major triad.
Let’s use the same root: A.
A minor = A–C–E
A major = A–C#–E
Both chords contain A and E. Only the middle note changes:
C = minor third
C# = major third
The third decides whether the triad is minor or major.

1–3–5 = major triad
So the point is not just to memorize “Am = A–C–E”. The point is to hear the role of the third. If the third is lower, the chord sounds minor. If the third is raised, the chord becomes major.

For example, an open A minor shape contains the notes A, E, A, C, and E. Five strings are sounding, but there are only three note names:

An arpeggio helps you hear the minor chord from the inside. In improvisation, this is useful: if you land on A, C, and E over an Am chord, the phrase sounds connected to the harmony.

Common mistakes
Thinking that minor always means sad. Minor often sounds darker than major, but mood depends on context. A fast minor riff can sound energetic, while a slow major chord can sound sad.
Looking for minor only through finger shapes. A shape helps you play, but it does not explain the chord. It is more reliable to look at the intervals: 1, ♭3, and 5.
Confusing the minor third with a lowered fifth. In a minor triad, the third is lowered. The fifth stays perfect. If you lower the fifth, you get a different type of chord.
Thinking that a triad must always use exactly three strings. On guitar, a minor triad often sounds on four, five, or six strings. That is normal: some notes are repeated in other octaves.
Calling any sad-sounding chord minor. Mood is not a reliable criterion. A minor triad is defined by its notes: root, minor third, and perfect fifth.
