Chords in a Minor Key

In natural minor, diatonic triads follow the pattern i–ii°–III–iv–v–VI–VII. But in real minor-key harmony, the seventh degree is often raised to create a major dominant and lead more strongly back to the tonic.

A minor key is not limited to one fixed scale.

Natural minor gives you the basic set of diatonic chords:

i–ii°–III–iv–v–VI–VII

In A natural minor:

Am–Bdim–C–Dm–Em–F–G

But in real minor-key harmony, the seventh degree is often raised. When that happens, the minor dominant v becomes a major dominant:

v  = Em
V  = E
V7 = E7

That is why minor-key songs often use V and V7 alongside the natural-minor chords.

The main idea

In minor, it is useful to think in two layers.

  • natural minor — the basic chord set
  • raised seventh degree — the source of a strong dominant

Natural minor sounds softer and more modal. The raised seventh degree creates a leading tone and pulls more strongly toward the tonic.

In A minor, this looks like this:

G  → A  = softer motion
G♯ → A  = stronger pull to the tonic

The note G♯ is why the chords E and E7 appear in A minor.

Chords of natural minor

Take A natural minor:

A–B–C–D–E–F–G

If you build a triad on each scale degree, you get:

A–C–E = Am
B–D–F = Bdim
C–E–G = C
D–F–A = Dm
E–G–B = Em
F–A–C = F
G–B–D = G

The natural-minor triad pattern is:

In natural minor, III, VI, and VII are major. i, iv, and v are minor. The second degree is diminished.

Why minor keys often use a major V

In A natural minor, the fifth degree gives a minor chord:

v  = Em
Em = E–G–B

The distance from G to A is a whole step, so the return to the tonic is soft:

G  → A
♭7 → 1

If you raise G to G♯, you get an E major chord:

V = E
E = E–G♯–B

Now G♯ is a semitone below A:

G♯ → A
7  → 1

This is the leading tone. It strongly wants to resolve to the tonic.

Comparing Em–Am and E–Am

Compare the two motions:

v  → i
Em → Am

and:

V → i
E → Am

The first sounds softer. The second sounds more directed.

Dominant seventh in minor

For a strong return, minor-key harmony often uses not just V, but V7.

In A minor:

E7 = E–G♯–B–D

This chord contains two important resolutions:

G♯ → A
D  → C

G♯ resolves to the tonic A. D resolves to C, the third of Am.

E7 → Am
V7 → i

This resolution is stronger than Em–Am.

Natural and harmonic cadences

Compare two cadences.

Natural minor:

i–iv–v–i
Am–Dm–Em–Am
The i–iv–v–i cadence in A natural minor

Here the dominant is minor. The music returns to the tonic, but the resolution is soft.

Now replace v with V7:

i–iv–V7–i
Am–Dm–E7–Am
The i–iv–V7–i cadence in A minor

G♯ appears, and the motion toward the tonic becomes stronger.

This is not a random “outside” chord. It is a standard minor-key device: raise the seventh degree to create a stronger dominant.

What happens to vii°

The raised seventh degree changes more than just V.

In A natural minor, the seventh degree is G:

VII = G
G–B–D

If you raise it to G♯, you can build a diminished chord on that note:

vii° = G♯dim
G♯–B–D

This chord matches the upper notes of E7:

E7    = E–G♯–B–D
G♯dim =   G♯–B–D

That is why vii° also belongs to the dominant area and can lead to i:

vii°  → i
G♯dim → Am

In song-based harmony, V and V7 are more common. vii° appears more often in directed or classical-style progressions.

Functional areas in minor

For practice, you can divide minor-key chords into three areas.

This is a simplified map. Context matters especially in minor.

For example, VII can move softly back to i, but without a leading tone it does not resolve as strongly as V7.

Relative major and parallel major

Minor keys are often confused with two different major-key relationships.

Relative major

A minor and C major use the same notes:

A minor: A–B–C–D–E–F–G
C major: C–D–E–F–G–A–B

These are relative keys.

The notes are the same, but the center is different:

A minor → center A
C major → center C

So the chords have different functions.

In C major, C is I. In A minor, C is III.

Parallel major

A minor and A major share the same tonic, A, but use different scale degrees:

A minor: A–B–C–D–E–F–G
A major: A–B–C♯–D–E–F♯–G♯

These are parallel keys.

When we say that minor contains ♭III, ♭VI, or ♭VII, we are comparing minor with its parallel major.

In A minor:

III = C
VI  = F
VII = G

In A major, those same scale positions would be:

C♯
F♯
G♯

Common progression: i–VI–III–VII

One common minor-key progression is:

i–VI–III–VII

In A minor:

Am–F–C–G

It uses only chords from natural minor.

There is no strong dominant V, so the harmony sounds cyclic and soft. This progression can repeat for a long time without sounding like it has reached a final stop.

Progression: i–VII–VI–V

Another characteristic minor-key pattern is:

i–VII–VI–V

In A minor:

Am–G–F–E
The i–VII–VI–V progression in A minor

The first three chords come from natural minor:

Am–G–F
i–VII–VI

But the final chord is the major dominant:

E = E–G♯–B

G♯ does not belong to A natural minor, but it creates a strong return to Am.

This progression shows practical minor-key harmony clearly: natural minor provides the main material, and the raised seventh degree strengthens the cadence.

How to transpose minor progressions

Minor progressions are easiest to transpose with Roman numerals.

Take this pattern:

i–VI–III–VII

In A minor:

Am–F–C–G

In D minor:

Dm–B♭–F–C

The chord names change, but their positions in the key stay the same.

If the pattern contains V or V7, keep the raised seventh degree when you transpose.

In A minor:

V7 = E7

In D minor:

V7 = A7

Because a strong dominant in D minor needs C♯:

A7 = A–C♯–E–G

How to build the chords of any minor key

It is best to split the process into two steps.

1. Build the natural minor set

For example, D natural minor:

D–E–F–G–A–B♭–C

The triad pattern is:

i–ii°–III–iv–v–VI–VII

This gives:

To create strong motion back to the tonic, raise the seventh degree.

In D minor:

C → C♯

Then the fifth-degree chord changes:

Now you have the basic natural-minor set plus the main chords used for a strong cadence.

How melody relates to the chords

In minor, melody and harmony often use more than one version of a scale degree.

In A minor:

G  = natural seventh degree
G♯ = raised seventh degree

If Em is sounding, the note G belongs naturally to the chord:

Em = E–G–B

If E or E7 is sounding, G♯ is usually the better fit:

E7 = E–G♯–B–D

So when writing a melody in minor, do not look only at the key. Also check the current chord.

Listen for the difference between a soft resolution and a directed one.

4. Build two progressions

Natural minor:

Am–F–C–G
i–VI–III–VII

With a major dominant:

Am–G–F–E
i–VII–VI–V

5. Transpose the pattern

Move i–VI–III–VII to D minor:

Dm–B♭–F–C

Then add a strong dominant:

A7 → Dm
V7 → i

Common mistakes

Using one formula for every type of minor. Natural, harmonic, and melodic minor produce different chords.

Treating major V as an unexplained outside chord. In minor, V appears because the seventh degree is raised.

Confusing v and V. v is the minor dominant from natural minor. V is the major dominant with a leading tone.

Confusing VII and vii°. VII is built on the natural seventh degree. vii° is built on the raised seventh degree.

Treating natural minor as the only correct form of minor. Real minor-key harmony often mixes natural and raised scale degrees.

Confusing relative and parallel major. A minor and C major share the same notes. A minor and A major share the same tonic, but have different scale degrees.

Assuming every minor song must use V7. A soft v–i motion can also be an intentional sound.
