An interval is the distance between two sounds. But those two sounds can appear in different ways: first one note and then the other, or both notes at the same time.
That is why the same interval can feel like melodic movement or like a sonority. For example, C and E form a major third. If you play C and then E, you get a melodic interval. If you play C and E together, you get a harmonic interval.
Simple definition
A melodic interval is two notes played or sung one after another.
A harmonic interval is two notes sounding at the same time.
C → E = melodic interval
C + E = harmonic interval
The name of the interval can stay the same. What changes is not the distance between the notes, but the way they sound.
In both examples, C and E form a major third. But in the first case, the ear hears movement from one note to another. In the second case, it hears the combined sound of two notes.
Melodic interval
A melodic interval is heard as movement.
When you play C and then E, the ear notices that the sound has moved up by a certain distance. That movement can feel narrow or wide, smooth or sharp, stable or tense.
Melodic intervals appear in riffs, vocal lines, solos, bass lines, and simple melodies. Every time a melody moves up or down, you are hearing a melodic interval.
For example:
C → D = second
C → E = third
C → G = fifth
C → C = octave
A melodic interval has direction. It can move up or down:
C → E = major third upward
E → C = major third downward
The interval is still a major third, but the feeling changes. Upward motion often feels like a rise or opening. Downward motion often feels like a fall or return.
Harmonic interval
A harmonic interval is heard as a sonority.
When C and E sound at the same time, the ear does not hear movement. It hears the combined sound of two notes. That interval may feel soft, dense, tense, hollow, or stable.
Harmonic intervals live inside chords. For example, C major contains the notes C, E, and G:
C–E–G
Inside that chord, there are several intervals:
C + E = major third
C + G = perfect fifth
E + G = minor third
So a chord can be understood as several intervals sounding together. If you learn to hear harmonic intervals, it becomes easier to work out chords, double-stops, and vocal harmonies by ear.

Melodic and harmonic intervals differ not by name, but by the way they sound.

For example, C and G always form a perfect fifth. But C → G and C + G are perceived differently.
C → G = melodic perfect fifth
C + G = harmonic perfect fifth
In the first case, you hear a leap. In the second, you hear an open and stable sonority.
Why the same interval feels different
The distance between C and E does not change. In both cases, it is a major third. But the ear has to solve different tasks.
In a melodic interval, the important thing is the path:
where the sound started → where it arrived
In a harmonic interval, the important thing is how the sounds fit together:
how two notes sound together
That is why practicing melodic and harmonic intervals develops different parts of your ear.
Melodic intervals help you:
- sing more accurately;
- pick out melodies by ear;
- remember riffs;
- hear the direction of a phrase;
- understand vocal and guitar lines more clearly.
Harmonic intervals help you:
- hear chords;
- distinguish sonorities;
- understand double-stops;
- work out harmonies;
- recognize chord color through individual notes.
If you practice only melodic intervals, you may get better at hearing melodic motion but still struggle with chords. If you practice only harmonic intervals, you may hear sonorities better but have trouble remembering melodic leaps. A musician needs both skills.
How to hear the difference
Take two notes: C and E.
First, play them one after another:
C → E
Listen for direction. The sound moved upward. Try to remember the feeling of that leap.
Now play them together:
C + E
Listen not for motion, but for the color of the sonority. A major third sounds soft and relatively stable, but not as open as a perfect fifth.
Repeat the same idea with C and G:
C → G
C + G
Melodically, this is a wide upward leap. Harmonically, it is a stable and open sonority.
How this relates to guitar
On guitar, a melodic interval can be played on one string or across different strings.
For example, C on the 3rd fret of the fifth string and E on the 7th fret of the same string form a major third played one note after another:
5th string: 3rd fret → 7th fret
C → E
A harmonic interval is more often played on neighboring strings or inside a chord. For example, C on the 3rd fret of the fifth string and E on the 2nd fret of the fourth string can be played at the same time:
5th string, 3rd fret = C
4th string, 2nd fret = E
C + E
In practice, this matters for:
- double-stops;
- riffs;
- chord fills;
- vocal harmonies;
- arpeggios;
- learning parts by ear.
For example, if you play C and E one after another, it may be part of a melody or an arpeggio. If you play C and E together, it becomes a sonority that can function as part of a C major chord.

The main goal is to understand that the interval name can stay the same, while the way it sounds changes the perception. In one case you hear movement. In the other, you hear a sonority.
Common mistakes
Thinking that melodic and harmonic intervals are different distances. No. The distance can be the same. The difference is whether the notes sound one after another or at the same time.
Practicing only melodic intervals. Melodic intervals are important for melodies and vocals. But if you want to hear chords more clearly, you also need to listen to harmonic intervals separately.
Expecting the same feeling. C → E and C + E have the same interval size, but they sound different. That is normal: the ear is solving different tasks.
Confusing a harmonic interval with a chord. A harmonic interval is two notes at the same time. A chord usually contains three or more notes. But chords can be analyzed through the harmonic intervals inside them.
Forgetting the direction of a melodic interval. C → E and E → C have the same interval size, but different motion. For the ear, that difference matters.
