How to Build Chord Progressions

A strong chord progression is not a random string of chords. It is a route through stability, motion, tension, and release.

A strong chord progression is not a random string of chords. It is a route in which each chord continues what came before and prepares what comes next.

You do not need unusual chords to build that route. Start with a key, decide how the harmony should move, set the rate of chord changes, and choose where the phrase should lead.

A chord progression is a sequence of chords organized in time. It may repeat as a loop, develop from one phrase to the next, or move toward a cadence.

Why Build a Progression Deliberately?

A deliberate progression helps you:

  • keep the music centered in a key;
  • create direction instead of merely changing shapes on the fretboard;
  • control tension and closure;
  • leave space for melody and rhythm;
  • transpose the same harmonic model to another key;
  • replace individual chords without breaking the whole progression.

The useful question is not “Which chord should come next?” but “What should the next chord do?”

Step 1. Choose a Key

A key gives you a core set of chords and a tonal center against which their roles can be heard.

The diatonic triads in C major are:

I     ii    iii   IV    V     vi    vii°
C     Dm    Em    F     G     Am    Bdim

You do not need all seven chords for your first progression. Three to five are usually enough.

Start with the clearest functions:

  • I — the tonal home;
  • ii or IV — departure from the tonic and preparation for stronger motion;
  • V or V7 — tension;
  • vi — an extension of the tonic area or a substitute for the expected tonic.

Step 2. Shape the Direction

The simplest functional route is:

home → departure → tension → return
tonic → predominant → dominant → tonic

A progression does not have to move directly from I to IV. You can place another chord between the tonic and the predominant to extend the opening state or change its color.

For example, in C major:

C → Am → Dm → G7 → C
I → vi → ii → V7 → I

Each chord has a clear job:

  • C establishes the tonal center;
  • Am keeps two notes from the tonic chord but weakens the sense of rest;
  • Dm moves into the predominant area;
  • G7 creates tension;
  • the final C restores stability.

This is more reliable than testing chords at random: choose the function first, then choose a chord that can perform it.

Step 3. Set the Length and Harmonic Rhythm

Harmonic rhythm is the rate at which the chords change. It does not have to match the rhythm of the melody or strumming pattern.

The same sequence can feel very different at different rates.

A slower version:

| C | Am | Dm | G7 | C |

A denser version:

| C  Am | Dm  G7 | C |

If the chords change too quickly, the listener may not have time to hear their functions. If every chord lasts too long, the progression may lose momentum.

Start with one chord per measure. Increase the harmonic rhythm only where you want stronger motion, especially near the end of a phrase.

Step 4. Decide Whether the Phrase Should Close

The final chord controls both the ending and what the progression seems to require next.

An open version:

C → Am → Dm → G7
I → vi → ii → V7

The dominant leaves the phrase unresolved. When the loop repeats, the next C supplies the resolution.

A closed version:

C → Am → Dm → G7 → C
I → vi → ii → V7 → I

The open version works well for a repeating verse or a phrase that should lead onward. The closed version gives the section a clearer finish.

Choose the ending according to the form, not according to a rule that every progression must end on the tonic. The main types of harmonic endings are covered in “Types of Cadences”.

Step 5. Improve the Voice Leading

A progression may be functionally sound and still feel awkward if every voice keeps leaping by large intervals.

Voice leading is the movement of individual notes from one chord to the next. Transitions usually sound smoother when common tones stay in place and the remaining notes move by small intervals.

Compare:

C → G → Am → F

with:

C → G/B → Am → F

In the second version, the bass moves more smoothly:

C → B → A

G/B is still a G major chord with dominant function, but B is placed in the bass. The inversion changes the voicing and bass line, not the chord’s basic harmonic role.

On acoustic guitar, check the actual fingerings as well as the chord symbols. Open strings can preserve common tones and make transitions feel more connected.

Step 6. Substitute Chords by Function

Different chords can perform similar harmonic jobs.

In C major, both F and Dm commonly prepare the dominant:

C → F → G7 → C
I → IV → V7 → I
C → Dm → G7 → C
I → ii → V7 → I

Both versions lead toward G7, but their color differs:

  • F creates a broader and more direct move away from the tonic;
  • Dm produces a smoother approach to the dominant.

This kind of substitution is more useful than replacing a chord at random because it preserves the progression’s direction.

Step 7. Repeat the Phrase and Change One Detail

Repetition makes the harmonic route easy to recognize. A small change near the end of the repeated phrase creates development.

For example:

first phrase:  C → Am → Dm → G
second phrase: C → Am → F → G7 → C

The first phrase remains open. In the second, F replaces Dm, the dominant becomes a seventh chord, and the tonic completes the motion.

You do not need to replace every chord. Often it is enough to:

  • substitute one chord with another of similar function;
  • change an inversion;
  • increase the harmonic rhythm before the cadence;
  • leave the first phrase open and close the second.

Step 8. Leave Space for the Melody

A progression is a foundation, not a complete song. The melody, rhythm, and phrasing still need room above it.

Check whether:

  • the chords change faster than the melody can form a phrase;
  • an important melody note clashes with the current chord;
  • some melody notes can be held across chord changes;
  • the bass line becomes more active than the melody;
  • the strongest harmonic ending matches the end of the musical phrase.

When the melody already exists, choose chords around its structural notes. When the progression comes first, sing or play a few short motifs over it before adding more harmonic detail.

Step 9. Write the Roman Numerals and Transpose the Model

Chord names describe one key. Roman numerals preserve the relationships between the chords.

The model:

I → vi → ii → V7 → I

In C major:

C → Am → Dm → G7 → C

In G major:

G → Em → Am → D7 → G

The chord names change, but the harmonic direction remains the same. This lets you adapt a progression to a singer’s range, a different tuning, or more convenient guitar fingerings.

How to Hear the Direction of a Progression

Do not begin by trying to name every chord. First answer four questions:

  1. Where does the music feel stable?
  2. When does it move away from that point?
  3. Which chord creates the strongest expectation?
  4. Does the progression return home, or remain open?

Then compare:

… → G7

with:

… → G7 → C

When you can hear the difference, you are already recognizing the functional route even if you cannot yet identify every chord by name.

How to See the Progression

Write the sequence in three lines:

chords:    C → Am → Dm → G7 → C
degrees:   I → vi → ii → V7 → I
functions: tonic → tonic substitute → predominant → dominant → tonic

This shows:

  • the chord symbols needed for performance;
  • the transferable Roman-numeral model;
  • the direction of the harmonic motion.

When a progression does not work, inspect the entire functional line instead of blaming a single chord.

  1. remove the final C and compare the open ending;
  2. replace Dm with F;
  3. shorten Dm and G7 from one measure to half a measure;
  4. use G/B instead of G to create a smoother bass line;
  5. transpose the I–vi–ii–V7–I model to G major.

A 7-Minute Exercise

1. Choose a Key

Use C major or G major and write down all seven diatonic triads.

2. Build the Route

Use:

I → vi → ii → V7 → I

Play one chord per measure.

3. Open the Ending

Remove the final I. Listen to how the dominant asks for continuation.

4. Replace the Predominant

Replace ii with IV. Compare the two versions without changing the other chords.

5. Change the Harmonic Rhythm

Shorten ii and V7 to half a measure each. Notice whether the motion toward the tonic becomes stronger.

6. Add an Inversion

In a separate I–V–vi–IV progression, replace V with V⁶. In C major, use G/B. Listen to the bass line C–B–A.

7. Transpose the Progression

Play the same Roman-numeral model in another key instead of relying on memorized chord names.

Common Mistakes

Testing chords without choosing a key. Borrowed and chromatic chords are valid, but first establish the tonal center and understand why the outside note is needed.

Changing chords on every beat. Frequent changes do not automatically create direction. Give the listener enough time to hear each chord’s role.

Always starting and ending on the tonic. A progression may begin on vi or IV and end on the dominant. Its position in the form determines what works.

Using too many different chords. Development often comes from rhythm, melody, inversions, or a changed ending—not from placing a new chord in every measure.

Treating an inversion as a new chord. G and G/B share the same harmonic root. The bass and voicing change, but the underlying harmony remains G.

Replacing chords only because the fingerings look similar. Playability matters, but first check the function and the connection to the surrounding chords.

Ignoring the melody. A theoretically correct progression may still obstruct a vocal or instrumental line. Judge the final result in the context of the complete music.
