Common Chord Progressions

A common chord progression is not a finished song. It is a proven harmonic route whose character changes with the key, starting point, rhythm, melody, and arrangement.

The same chord progressions appear in pop, rock, jazz, folk, and singer-songwriter music. That does not make all songs sound alike. A progression provides only the harmonic route. Melody, rhythm, tempo, texture, and form turn it into a specific piece of music.

A common chord progression is a stable pattern of movement between scale degrees. Roman numerals make the pattern easy to recognize and transpose to any key.

This article covers eight models. They are not a list of the “best chords,” but a set of routes with different qualities: cyclic, cadential, minor, and modal.

Why Some Progressions Appear More Often Than Others

Reliable progressions usually combine several qualities:

  • they establish a clear tonal center;
  • they alternate stability and tension;
  • neighboring chords share common tones;
  • they allow smooth bass movement;
  • they can loop naturally;
  • they leave room for a melody.

One progression can support dozens of different melodies. Sharing the same scale-degree pattern does not make two songs identical.

How to Read the Patterns

A Roman numeral shows a chord’s scale degree:

  • an uppercase numeral represents a major chord;
  • a lowercase numeral represents a minor chord;
  • ° represents a diminished chord;
  • before a numeral lowers that scale degree relative to the major scale.

For example:

I–V–vi–IV

In C major:

C–G–Am–F

In G major:

G–D–Em–C

The chord names change, but the relationships remain the same.

I–V–vi–IV: A Balanced Loop

In C major:

C → G → Am → F
I → V → vi → IV

Why it works:

  • I establishes the tonal center immediately;
  • V creates motion but moves to vi instead of resolving directly;
  • vi shares two notes with the tonic triad;
  • IV moves away from the center and returns naturally to I when the loop repeats.

The four chords do not contain a final cadence within the pattern itself. Closure appears across the loop boundary: IV → I.

Character: stable, open, and adaptable. Melody and tempo can change its mood substantially.

When to use it: a verse, chorus, or instrumental section that needs to repeat without a hard stop.

vi–IV–I–V: The Same Chords, a Different Focus

In C major:

Am → F  → C → G
vi → IV → I → V

This pattern uses the same four chords as the previous one but begins on vi.

That darker starting point changes the balance:

  • Am introduces a minor color immediately;
  • F → C creates a gentle brightening;
  • G leaves tension before the loop returns to Am.

Starting on Am does not automatically establish A minor as the key. The tonal center depends on the complete pattern of emphasis, the melody, and the points of resolution—not simply the first chord.

Character: reflective, but not necessarily sad.

When to use it: when you want a minor shade inside a major-key progression without fully shifting to the relative minor.

I–vi–IV–V: Clear Motion Toward the Dominant

In C major:

C → Am → F  → G
I → vi → IV → V

This model gradually moves away from the tonic area:

  • I → vi changes the color without a sharp break;
  • IV moves into the predominant area;
  • V creates a clear expectation of returning to I.

The tonic appears only at the beginning of the cycle, so the final V strongly points toward the first chord of the next repetition.

Character: clear, lyrical, and slightly retro at slower tempos.

When to use it: vocal melodies with distinct phrases, ballads, or verses that need a strong lead back to the beginning of the loop.

I–IV–V–I: The Foundation of Functional Harmony

In G major:

G → C  → D → G
I → IV → V → I

The three primary functions are clearly present:

tonic → predominant → dominant → tonic

The model is simple, but not simplistic. Its character changes significantly through:

  • chord duration;
  • inversions;
  • bass movement;
  • accompaniment rhythm;
  • replacing V with V7;
  • adding passing chords.

Character: direct and complete.

When to use it: folk, blues-based and rock-and-roll harmony, introductory harmonization exercises, or a clear phrase ending.

ii–V–I: Strong Cadential Motion

In C major:

Dm → G7 → C
ii → V7 → I

This is less a four-chord loop than a compact route toward the tonic:

  • ii prepares the dominant;
  • V7 creates the strongest tension;
  • I resolves it.

The chords support smooth voice leading. For example, F in Dm becomes the seventh of G7, then resolves down to E in the C chord.

Character: directed and conclusive.

When to use it: a cadence at the end of a section, jazz or popular harmony, or preparation for a new tonal center.

i–VI–III–VII: A Cyclic Minor Progression

In A minor:

Am → F → C   → G
i → VI → III → VII

All four chords come from the A natural minor scale. The progression avoids the major dominant E or E7, so the tension remains relatively soft.

The movement relies on closely related triads:

  • Am → F retains the note A;
  • F → C retains C;
  • C → G retains G;
  • G → Am returns to the minor center without a strong functional cadence.

Character: minor, flowing, and cyclic.

When to use it: atmospheric rock, pop, folk, a repeating verse, or an instrumental backing pattern.

i–iv–V–i: Functional Minor

In A minor:

Am → Dm → E7 → Am
i  → iv → V7 → i

The natural minor scale would produce Em on the fifth degree. This progression instead uses E7, whose G# comes from A harmonic minor.

That G# strengthens the pull toward A:

G# → A

As a result, E7 → Am sounds much more decisive than Em → Am.

Character: dramatic and conclusive.

When to use it: a strong minor cadence, functional minor harmony, or a dramatic ending to a verse or chorus.

I–♭VII–IV–I: A Modal Rock Progression

With A as the tonal center:

A → G    → D  → A
I → ♭VII → IV → I

The G chord does not belong to A major, which contains G#. The lowered seventh degree gives the progression a Mixolydian or blues-rock color.

There is no classical dominant E. The return is built through plagal motion:

D  → A
IV → I

Character: open, rock-oriented, and less dependent on classical dominant resolution.

When to use it: riff-based music, rock, blues rock, or music organized around a modal tonal center.

The Same Chords Can Produce Different Progressions

Compare these two loops:

C → G → Am → F
I → V → vi → IV
Am → F  → C → G
vi → IV → I → V

They use the same chord collection:

C, G, Am, F

But they change:

  • the opening chord;
  • the tonic’s position inside the loop;
  • the chord placed before the repetition;
  • the direction of the bass;
  • the point of greatest tension.

Reordering the chords is not a cosmetic change. It alters the form, the distribution of stability, and the listener’s sense of direction.

How to Choose a Progression

The table describes each model’s basic tendency, not a strict genre rule. A slower tempo, syncopated rhythm, or different melody can completely change the result.

How to Hear the Difference

For each model, listen for four points:

  1. Which chord feels most stable?
  2. Which chord creates the most tension?
  3. Does the tension resolve inside the progression or only when the loop repeats?
  4. Does the loop sound major, minor, or modal?

The most useful comparisons are:

  • I–V–vi–IV and vi–IV–I–V;
  • i–VI–III–VII and i–iv–V7–i;
  • I–IV–V–I and I–♭VII–IV–I.

Each pair organizes related material according to a different harmonic logic.

How to See Each Chord’s Function

Write the model on three lines:

chords:  C → G → Am → F
degrees: I → V → vi → IV
role:    home → tension → tonic substitute → departure

For the functional minor progression:

chords:  Am → Dm → E7 → Am
degrees: i  → iv → V7 → i
role:    home → preparation → tension → resolution

This makes it easier to understand why chords with similarly convenient fingerings can perform very different jobs.

How to Test the Progressions in Six Strings App

For each model:

  1. change the key;
  2. change the duration of the final chord;
  3. use an inversion for one of the middle chords;
  4. move the first chord to the end;
  5. compare an open and a closed ending;
  6. add a simple rhythm and sing a short melody over it.

The tool is not meant to select the “correct” progression for you. It lets you compare alternatives quickly.

A 7-Minute Exercise

1. Choose Four Models

Use:

I–V–vi–IV
vi–IV–I–V
i–VI–III–VII
i–iv–V7–i

2. Play One Complete Loop of Each

Use one chord per measure. Keep the same tempo for all four models.

3. Find the Tonal Center

After each loop, name the chord that feels like home.

4. Find the Tension

Identify where the music creates an expectation of continuation or resolution.

5. Compare the Two Major-Key Models

Play I–V–vi–IV, then vi–IV–I–V in the same key. Explain the difference without using only words such as “happier” or “sadder”: locate the tonic, identify the final chord, and describe how the loop points back to its beginning.

6. Compare the Two Minor Models

Play i–VI–III–VII, then i–iv–V7–i. Listen to how the major dominant changes the strength of the return.

7. Change One Detail

In any model:

  • replace one root-position chord with an inversion;
  • double the duration of the final chord;
  • increase the harmonic rhythm before the return;
  • transpose the progression to another key.

Common Mistakes

Treating a common progression as a finished song. It provides the harmonic foundation. The song emerges only when melody, rhythm, lyrics, texture, and form are added.

Choosing a model only because it appears in famous songs. The same scale degrees can behave differently at another tempo or in another context. Listen to your own material first.

Assuming the first chord is the tonal center. A loop may begin on vi, IV, or another chord. The tonic is established by the complete harmony and melody.

Ignoring the loop boundary. In cyclic progressions, the move from the last chord back to the first is essential. The resolution often occurs there.

Using only root-position chords. Inversions help create a smoother bass line and connect chords without large leaps.

Treating ♭VII as a regular diatonic chord in major. In I–♭VII–IV–I, the lowered seventh degree creates a modal or borrowed color.

Expecting the progression to define the genre by itself. Genre depends more strongly on rhythm, timbre, texture, articulation, and form.
