Introduction
For a long time, I understood harmony with my eyes.
I could open a key, see its chords, read I–V–vi–IV, and understand where the tonic, dominant, and subdominant were. On a diagram, everything looked clear. But as soon as I closed my eyes and listened to a progression, that logic often fell apart.
The chords sounded good, but it was not always clear what was actually happening. One chord felt like “home.” Another moved away from it. A third one clearly wanted to go somewhere. But how do you name that feeling? How do you separate hearing from guessing? How do you use it when analyzing songs or writing your own progressions?
That problem is why I built the Chord Function Trainer.
I did not want to make another reference page or a theory quiz. I wanted a small listening tool: hear a harmonic context and understand what role a chord plays inside a key.
Why I Needed This Trainer
Six Strings App already has tools that show harmony visually.
In Harmony, you can choose a key and see its chords. In the Song Builder, you can create a progression and hear how it sounds. In the Circle of Fifths, you can navigate major keys, minor keys, and related tonalities.
But there was still a gap between “I can see it” and “I can hear it.”
You can know that in C major, the chord G is the V chord. You can know that the dominant wants to resolve to the tonic. But knowing that does not automatically mean your ear will recognize that pull in real music.
I wanted a trainer built around one simple question:
What does this chord do in the key?
Not what it is called. Not what fingering it uses. Not which notes it contains. But what role it plays in the movement.
What Is a Chord Function?
A chord function is the role a chord plays inside a key.
In simple terms, a key has a sense of center. Some chords feel like “home.” Some chords move away from home. Some chords create tension and want to return.
At a basic level, you can think of it like this:
- tonic — stability, rest, the feeling of home;
- subdominant — movement away from home;
- dominant — tension and expectation of resolution;
- other scale degrees — additional shades of those roles.
For example, in C major, C feels like the I chord — the tonic. F sounds like the IV chord — the subdominant. G works as the V chord — the dominant.
But the letter name is not the main point. The context is.
The Same Chord Can Play Different Roles
This was one of those things I understood in theory long before I could really feel it by ear.
The chord G by itself is just G. But in different keys, it behaves differently:
C major: G = V chord, dominant
G major: G = I chord, tonic
D major: G = IV chord, subdominant
The name stays the same. The feeling changes.
When you think only in chord names, it is easy to get stuck in mechanics: C, G, Am, F. When you think in functions, the progression gets a meaning: I–V–vi–IV.
That notation is not useful just because it looks neat. It helps you hear and remember the movement.
For example:
C – G – Am – F
in C major is:
I – V – vi – IV
In G major, the same functional pattern becomes:
G – D – Em – C
The chords changed. The movement stayed the same.

In real music, we do not hear isolated flashcards with chord names written on them. We hear movement. That is why chord functions are best trained in context: through short progressions, cadences, and returns.
How the Training Works
The idea is simple.
The trainer gives you a harmonic context in a selected key. You listen to the progression and identify the function of the missing chord.
The main focus is not answer speed. It is more useful to ask yourself after each example:
- What did I hear?
- Did it feel stable?
- Did it move away?
- Did it create tension?
- Did it ask for resolution?
This is how your ear starts connecting a feeling with a function.
It is better to start with a simple setup: major key, short progressions, basic scale degrees. You do not need to enable everything at once. I, IV, and V are already enough to build a useful foundation.
Later, you can add vi, ii, iii, vii°, minor keys, and more complex progressions.
Why This Helps Guitarists
Guitarists often think in shapes.
That is natural. The guitar is built in a way that makes your hand memorize fingerings quickly. We remember the E shape, the A shape, barre chords, open chords, and familiar chord moves. But a shape on the fretboard does not explain why that chord belongs in that exact place.
Chord functions help you move one level higher.
Instead of hearing:
here is C, then G, then Am, then F
you can hear:
home → tension → softer shift → movement away
Or more precisely:
I → V → vi → IV
After that, the progression becomes easier to:
- remember;
- transpose;
- play in another key;
- change for a chorus or bridge;
- use as a starting point for your own song.
For me, this matters especially in songwriting. When you write a song, you usually do not want to just move familiar shapes around. You want to understand what changes in the feeling when you choose a different chord.
Example: I–IV–V–I
Let’s take C major.
C – F – G – C
As functions:
I – IV – V – I
First you hear stability. Then the harmony moves away from it. Then tension appears. At the end, the music returns home.
On guitar, this progression may look very simple. But for the ear, it is a fundamental movement: home — departure — tension — return.
These simple progressions are worth listening to carefully. Not because they are “for beginners,” but because much more complex harmony grows out of them.
Example: I–V–vi–IV
Now take another familiar pattern:
C – G – Am – F
As functions:
I – V – vi – IV
It starts with stability, quickly creates tension through V, and then moves to vi. The sixth degree often feels softer and darker than I. It is related to the tonic, but it does not give the same complete feeling of home.
After that, IV keeps the movement open. The progression can continue, return, repeat, or move into another section of the song.
If you listen only for chord names, these are just four familiar shapes. If you listen for functions, you can understand why the progression moves the way it does.
How I Would Practice With This Trainer
I would not start with long sessions.
For harmonic hearing, short and regular practice works better. Five to ten minutes is enough. The main point is not to turn the exercise into mechanical guessing.
1. First, Find “Home”
Choose a simple major key and listen to several examples.
Do not rush to answer. First, try to feel where the center is. What sounds like the moment where the music could stop?
That feeling matters more than the term.
2. Then Compare IV and V
IV and V are easy to confuse if you hear both of them only as “a chord after the tonic.” But they have different energy.
IV usually moves away from home more softly. V creates a stronger expectation of return.
Try to listen not for chord quality, but for direction.
3. Then Add the Other Chords in the Key
vi is interesting because it feels close to the tonic, but it does not fully replace it.
In C major, that is Am. It can sound calm, soft, and a little darker. But if you put F or G after it, the movement immediately changes.
ii and iii add their own shades too. They are not as strong as IV and V, but they still change the feeling of the progression.
4. After a Mistake, Listen Again
The most useful part of practice is not the correct answer. It is the mistake review.
If you confused IV and vi, listen to the example again. Ask yourself: what confused me? Did the chord sound too soft? Was the sense of movement unclear? Did I expect it to continue?
That trains hearing, not interface reaction.
Use Cases
Song Analysis
When you figure out a song by ear, functions help you avoid blindly trying random chords.
First, you can identify the key. Then you can hear where the progression returns to stability, where it creates tension, and where it moves away. After that, it becomes easier to test specific chords.
For example, if you hear strong tension before a return home, it makes sense to check the V chord. If you hear a softer movement away from the tonic, IV or vi may be likely.
This does not replace your instrument or ear checking, but it narrows the search.
Songwriting
In songwriting, functions help you think in drama.
You can begin not with specific chord names, but with a feeling:
home → departure → tension → return
Then choose chords in the key:
I – IV – V – I
Or make the movement less direct:
I – vi – IV – V
Or start away from the tonic so the song feels slightly less settled from the first chord:
vi – IV – I – V
This turns harmony from a random set of chords into a way to shape expectation.
Transposition
If a song is written as C–G–Am–F, you have to rebuild the names when you move it to another key.
If it is understood as I–V–vi–IV, transposition becomes much easier. In G major, it becomes G–D–Em–C. In D major, it becomes D–A–Bm–G.
Functions give you a pattern that survives a key change.
Lessons With a Student
For a teacher, the trainer can work as a short listening block.
For example:
- First, the student listens to simple major progressions and looks for home.
- Then they compare IV and V to feel the difference between soft movement and tension.
- Then they add vi and hear how it differs from I.
- Then they look for similar movements in real songs.
This turns chord functions from a table into a listening experience.

Common Mistakes
Trying to Hear Function Without Context
Function does not exist outside a key.
The chord G is not “a dominant in general.” It becomes the dominant in C major, the tonic in G major, and the subdominant in D major.
That is why it is important to hear not just one chord, but its place in the movement.
Learning Roman Numerals as a Table
I, IV, V, and vi are useful only when there is a listening experience behind them.
If I is just a symbol, it does not help much. If I is a heard sense of home, the symbol becomes a short label for a real musical feeling.
Starting With Settings That Are Too Complex
Harmonic hearing is better built gradually.
Start with I, IV, and V. Then add other triads. Then minor keys. Then more complex chords and progressions.
It is easy to make the exercise harder. It is harder to honestly hear something simple.
Answering Too Quickly
Speed is not the point here.
It is better to listen twice and understand what happened than to click an answer quickly and move on.

Is This Absolute Pitch Training?
